Sunshine Skyway Bridge

From St. Pete's Beach to Bradenton

Florida has some pretty spectacular bridges. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is one of them. It spans the mouth of Tampa Bay as it meets the Gulf of Mexico and connects St. Petersburg and Bradenton. Completed in 1987, the 5.5 mile long Sunshine Skyway is the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridge.

We drove this in the fog and rain. If you are not a fan of driving on high bridges, this could be a little disquieting. On a similar rainy, foggy day in 1980, the predecessor to this bridge collapsed in one of the worst bridge disasters in U.S. history after a tug boat rammed a support.
