Elizabeth Anne VanderPutten in Indonesia

In indonesia in 1968, education had just been made free and compulsory. They had two problems: a shortage of schools and teachers.

The World Bank's first Indonesian Project built schools. The Bank's second project was devoted to teacher education. This was my project.

An elite demonstration school set up for this project. I made a deal with students. For every word of English I taught them, they had to teach me a word in Bahasa Indonesia.
